The club beginners’ courses
are run according to the guidelines laid down by the sport’s governing body, ArcheryGB. The aim of the course is to turn the complete beginner into a safe and competent novice archer, where they are capable of maintaining and shooting a bow safely and understand the discipline and etiquette of shooting. All the information on our forthcoming courses is on our dedicated Facebook page. Please have a look at what’s on.
Children under 8 are unfortunately not covered by our insurance: but the course is open to anybody else who is capable of safely using the equipment: in practice we sometimes find that children under 10 are not quite big or strong enough to participate effectively, or are not quite ready for the amount of listening and following instruction that is involved! Similarly, those who are older or with health problems may also struggle physically. However, everyone is different and you are welcome to try! Archery is particularly suitable for disabled persons in wheelchairs. The Society reserves the right not to accept onto a course anybody who is not considered safe, for whatever reason.
Times, dates and venues
Courses are run several times a year depending on demand.
- Indoor (Winter) courses will consist of four Saturday afternoon (3 hour) sessions at our training venue in Worcester.
- Outdoor (Summer) courses will consist of five 2 hour sessions (normally Tuesday & Thursday evenings) at our outdoor facility near Droitwich.
- All archers joining the club from our beginners’ courses will have an extra lesson / induction session immediately following the end of the course.
All those booking a place will be sent confirmation of the times and venue, but a map is also available here. All details on our current and planned courses are on our dedicated FaceBook page.
Booking & payment
Safety considerations place a limit on the number of spaces on the course and spaces will be allocated first-come first-served. A normal course would be 16 candidates on indoor courses, 6 - 8 on outdoor ones. Booking can only be done by completing a booking form and return it to the address on the form (along with your payment). For the current cost please see the panel on the right. The cost includes use of all the equipment necessary for the course: please do not purchase anything in advance.
The course will be run by a ArcheryGB accredited coach, and the club will provide additional coaches and instructors as necessary for the number of participants. All ArcheryGB coaches have undergone Enhanced DBS checks. Please note that all the staff (including the coaches) are volunteers, and are giving up their own practice time to run these courses.
Membership & ongoing training
If you complete the course to the satisfaction of our coaches you will be invited to join the club. If you decide to become a member you will receive additional training, designed to further improve your shooting and to introduce you to the way of life of a club archer. These sessions will be during a normal club shooting session, to aid integration into the club.
